ROCNEL SE50 — 10th Anniversary Edition
A Contemporary Interpretation of a Ten-Year-Old
Design
The Rocnel SE50 is the latest evolution of the
Single Edge 50 platform, originally introduced in 2016 and now reimagined to
commemorate its tenth anniversary.
This model is neither a simple reproduction nor
an exact copy of the original SE50. While preserving the fundamental character
and operating principle of the first model, its material, manufacturing
methods, blade-clamping system, handle design, engravings, logo placement, and
surface finish have all been reconsidered according to Rocnel’s current
production standards.
The result represents ten years of SE50
development, combining precision manufacturing, a carefully selected special
steel, and a distinctly direct shaving character within a refined Single Edge
platform.
AISI 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel
The body and principal components of the SE50 are
manufactured from AISI 2205 duplex stainless steel.
Duplex stainless steels combine the advantages of
austenitic and ferritic microstructures. AISI 2205 offers high mechanical
strength, exceptional rigidity, strong wear resistance, and excellent corrosion
resistance, giving it a significantly different character from conventional
stainless steels.
This material was selected not only for
durability. The structural strength and rigidity of duplex steel form an
integral part of the SE50’s shaving performance.
Transferring Body Rigidity to the Blade
The performance of a razor is not determined
solely by blade gap or head geometry. The way the blade is supported inside the
head, the points from which it is secured, and the degree to which it can move
during shaving are equally important.
In the SE50, the 50 mm Artist Club blade is not
simply pressed against a single surface. It is firmly supported from both above
and below. This dual-sided clamping system creates a highly rigid connection
between the blade and the duplex stainless-steel body.
The rigidity of AISI 2205 duplex steel is
transferred directly through the blade-support structure. This significantly
reduces microscopic flex, vibration, and unwanted blade movement during shaving.
Rather than behaving as a thin, independently flexing component, the blade acts
more like a firm and controlled cutting edge integrated with the razor head.
This is particularly important with 50 mm Single
Edge blades because of their long cutting edge. Balanced support across the
blade helps maintain consistent performance along its full length.
Reduced Vibration and a More Direct Shaving
Sensation
Reducing blade vibration is one of the
fundamental objectives of the SE50 design.
Microscopic blade movement during shaving can
affect sound, cutting sensation, and control on the skin. The SE50’s strong
upper and lower clamping system, combined with the rigidity of its duplex steel
body, is designed to restrict this movement as much as possible.
As a result, the cutting edge operates with
greater stability, clarity, and control. The user can feel the blade’s movement
across the skin more directly. This character is intended to preserve the
practical advantages of a safety razor while approaching the firm, uninterrupted,
and direct cutting sensation associated with a straight razor.
The SE50’s performance philosophy is not based
solely on aggressiveness. Its primary objective is to use the blade’s cutting
ability in a controlled manner, reduce vibration, and deliver consistent
performance across the entire cutting edge.
Artist Club 50 mm Blade Platform
The Rocnel SE50 is designed for use with Artist
Club-style 50 mm Single Edge blades.
The wide, uninterrupted cutting edge of these
blades allows a larger area to be covered with each stroke. The SE50’s head
geometry and blade-support system have been designed to make efficient use of
the performance offered by this long cutting edge.
The blade position, clamping surfaces, and
cutting-edge support work together to create a balanced and predictable shaving
character.
Sliding Top-Cap Mechanism
One of the defining characteristics of the SE50
is its sliding top-cap mechanism.
The blade is positioned within the guiding
structure of the head, and the top cap slides into place to close the
mechanism. This sliding-door principle guides the blade into its correct
position and secures it firmly inside the head.
Without introducing unnecessary components, the
mechanism combines simplicity, durability, and precise blade positioning. Blade
replacement remains straightforward, while the blade is held firmly and
securely once the cap is closed.
Precision Wire EDM Manufacturing
The SE50’s critical head components and
blade-related geometries are manufactured using Wire EDM technology.
Rather than cutting the material through
conventional mechanical force, Wire EDM shapes the steel through controlled
electrical discharge. This process makes it possible to achieve exceptionally
precise cuts, controlled surfaces, and repeatable dimensions, particularly when
working with hard and highly durable duplex stainless steel.
The blade position, upper and lower clamping
surfaces, sliding mechanism, and the relationship between interacting
components are all controlled with high precision. Production focuses not only
on the external appearance of each part but also on the operating quality of
the mechanism and the ability to reproduce the same performance consistently
across every razor.
Following Wire EDM, the components undergo the
necessary precision-machining and surface-finishing stages. Functional contact
surfaces and external cosmetic surfaces are treated separately according to
their specific requirements.
Sandblasted Matte Finish
The external surfaces of the SE50 will be
finished through a controlled sandblasting process.
Sandblasting preserves the natural metallic
character of duplex steel while creating a uniform, low-reflection matte
appearance. Instead of a highly polished or mirror-like surface, the SE50 has
been given a more technical, industrial, and restrained finish.
The matte surface visually complements the
precision Wire EDM manufacturing and the robust character of AISI 2205 duplex
stainless steel. A consistent and balanced surface tone is intended across the
head, handle, and other external components.
Updated Design Details
While the fundamental design identity of the SE50
has been preserved, several visual and functional details have been updated for
the tenth-anniversary edition.
The product engravings, rear Rocnel logo, handle
design, and selected surface details have been revised. Consequently, although
the new SE50 belongs unmistakably to the same design family as the previous
versions, it will have its own distinctive visual identity.
Final production photographs have not yet been
released. The images used on the pre-order page are commemorative campaign and
manufacturing visuals; they are not photographs or representations of the
razor’s final external appearance.
Collectibility and Security Serial Number
A serial number will not be engraved directly
onto the body of the SE50.
Instead, each product will carry an independent
and unique serial number on its security seal. This preserves the clean and
uninterrupted appearance of the razor while allowing every individually
packaged product to be separately identified and recorded.
Pre-Order and Shipping Information
